Thursday, July 9, 2020 - Thursday, July 9, 2020

THURSDAY, JULY 9 AT 10:00AM PT. 2050 targets for net-zero emissions have experienced a meteoric rise as carbon policies move to the top of policy agendas. Stakeholders are now wondering whether these targets can be reached with electrons alone, or if we need molecules too. The renewables transition is making great strides, but the path from 50% decarbonization targets to full decarbonization will require a leap in terms of how we think about delivering energy.

Join Guidehouse's experts for a lively discussion on the role of hydrogen in enabling greater resiliency in a fully decarbonized future, and how organizations can begin tapping into its potential. This discussion is the fourth installment in a new Guidehouse webinar series, Pathways to Resilience: Infrastructure 4.0.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 29 AT 8:00AM PT. Hydrogen in the Universe - and on Earth.

We are living in dramatic times of climate change and its impact on the Earth's environment, on our quality of life and on global migration of humans.

Hence, it is about highest time to change our way of energy consumption and switch to CO2-free energy sources. The most powerful and reliable energy source, which we could easily tab, is the Sun. With the power of the Sun (which is also responsible for the winds on Earth) we can easily satisfy the world's total energy demand. An issue which is often raised when it comes to the large-scale usage of renewable energy sources is transportation and storage as those sources are highly local and temporally fluctuating.

Nevertheless even here, the technical solution is ready to use: H2. Hydrogen is the most abundant element and molecule in the Universe, but unfortunately not available in molecular form (H2) on Earth. Fortunately, H2 is easily produced just from water via electrolysis and back-converted with via fuel cells.

In this talk, Prof. Dr. Robi Banerjee will give an (global/astrophysical) overview of how to realistically install a Sun and H2-based energy economy and discuss the next steps we have to take to be successful.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15 AT 8:00AM PT. Steve Mathison will introduce concepts to lower the cost of hydrogen fueling by making improvements to the existing SAE J2601 protocols and by utilizing completely new protocol approaches which can facilitate customer acceptable fueling at warmer hydrogen pre-cooling temperatures. These methods would reduce the cost of chillers at the station, reduce energy consumption, and increase station reliability without sacrificing fueling performance. These approaches are especially applicable to high flow fueling at 70 MPa, a key aspect of H2@Scale, wherein station energy consumption and customer sensitivity to fuel costs is even more prominent than it is for light duty fueling.

Steve Mathison recently joined NREL as a Research Engineer in the Hydrogen Production, Power, and Storage group. Steve previously worked as a Principal Engineer at Honda R&D Americas, LLC, where he developed the MC Formula fueling protocol. Steve also serves as the current document sponsor for SAE J2601, and as Chair of the SAE Fuel Cell Standards Committee Interface Taskforce.

UPDATE MARCH 14-17, 2021 Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have rescheduled our October 2020 TRANSform Conference & EXPO. The event will now take place March 14-17, 2021, in Anaheim, California

Friday, June 19, 2020 - Friday, June 19, 2020

FRIDAY, JUNE 19, AT 9:00AM PT. The 2nd Advisory Committee meeting for the Clean Transportation Program's 2020-2023 Investment Plan Update has been rescheduled to June 19th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.  We have also determined the meeting start time to be 9:00 AM, with the meeting concluding at 1:00 PM. Since the meeting will be conducted virtually, by way of ZOOM, which we understand is not the ideal format, we're asking that participants come with prepared and focused statements in order to make best use of the time. If this not possible, the 19-ALT-01 docket is available to capture all your comments.

The Presiding Member of the Clean Transportation Program Advisory Committee (Advisory Committee) and staff of the California Energy Commission (CEC) will conduct a public remote-access meeting of the Advisory Committee for the Clean Transportation Program. Staff will present an overview of proposed allocations included in the lead commissioner report version of the 2020-2023 Investment Plan Update for the Clean Transportation Program. Staff will discuss revisions to the 2020-2030 Investment Plan Update, including changes made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on jobs and the economy. Since the first Advisory Committee meeting occurred before the pandemic, the focus of the discussion will primarily be on how to leverage funding to create jobs, stimulate the economy, and support equity while advancing the state’s goals for clean transportation.

The lead commissioner report represents the next step in developing the 2020-2023 Investment Plan Update. Before the adoption of the report at a CEC business meeting in August, the CEC may release a revised lead commissioner report. The CEC seeks input from the Advisory Committee, the Disadvantaged Communities Advisory Group, other key stakeholders, and the public regarding the proposed allocations and rationale. Because this meeting will focus on COVID-19 impacts and resulting changes to the investment plan, the CEC strongly encourages all stakeholders submit their additional comments to the 19-ALT-01 docket.

The workshop will be held remotely, consistent with Executive Orders N-25-20 and N-29-20 and the recommendations from the California Department of Public Health to encourage physical distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19. The public can participate and observe the workshop consistent with the direction in these Executive Orders. Instructions for remote participation are below.

The Presiding Member of the Advisory Committee, Commissioner Patty Monahan, will attend. A quorum of Commissioners may attend, but no votes will be taken.
