The California Energy Commission (CEC) will host a workshop to discuss and receive stakeholder feedback on how to define, measure, and improve the benefits provided to communities by the CEC Clean Transportation Program (CTP). The CEC is committed to equity, which includes how funds are allocated.
This workshop continues the effort to ensure that CTP projects are not only located in disadvantaged and low-income communities but also that these communities benefit from CTP investments.

The public can participate in the workshop consistent with the attendance instructions below. The CEC aims to begin promptly at the start time posted and the end time is an estimate based on the proposed agenda. The workshop may end sooner or later than the posted end time. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1 AT 10:00AM PACIFIC. The California Energy Commission (CEC) will host a staff workshop to solicit feedback on the implementation of the new Clean Hydrogen Program created under Assembly Bill (AB) 209 (The Energy and Climate Change budget bill, Chapter 251, enacted in September 2022). This new program will contribute to economy-wide decarbonization by providing opportunities to accelerate clean hydrogen production and use. The staff workshop will discuss proposed program scope, project eligibility, and project requirements and considerations. Additionally, stakeholders and members of the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback during the workshop and via written comment.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29 AT 3:00PM EASTERN. With state and regional efforts to advance a clean hydrogen economy rapidly expanding, it will be important to consider the corresponding economic development and workforce opportunities. Tax credits are available for clean hydrogen projects that will boost economic opportunity, and investments in pilot demonstration projects may support new revenue opportunities for local communities. To help address labor gaps across the clean hydrogen supply chain and expand access to careers in the sector, states can support workforce development efforts, such as re-training programs for former oil and gas workers or apprenticeship programs at local colleges and technical institutions. This webinar will provide State Energy Offices with an overview of these and other potential workforce and economic development strategies as they explore a market for clean hydrogen in their states and regions.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9 - THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10 Global Mass Transit is organizing its second conference on “Clean Buses in the US”, on November 9-10, 2022 at InterContinental San Francisco. As of December 2021, over 3,500 ZEBs have been funded, ordered, delivered or deployed in the US. California is leading the deployment of ZEBs in the country and accounts for a 39 per cent share of the current ZEB fleet. This is driven primarily by its policies and programs that target a 100 per cent ZEB fleet by 2040. Other leading states include Washington, New York and Florida.

Transit agencies have mostly focused on the deployment of battery electric buses, with 95 percent of the current ZEB fleet comprising electric buses. Only a 5 percent share is occupied by fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs). This is due to factors such as the lower cost of procurement of electric buses and charging infrastructure. However, in the coming decade, the demand for hydrogen buses is expected to increase, owing mainly to factors such as faster refueling time and better mileage.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15 AT 10:00AM CENTRAL. Join moderator Kristine Wiley with GTI Energy expert Derek Wissmiller, PhD. Hydrogen has the potential to play a significant role in decarbonizing our energy systems. The carbon intensity of hydrogen production can vary considerably due to variations in performance and/or emissions associated with processes upstream of the hydrogen production facility.

GTI Energy has developed the Hydrogen Production Emissions Calculator (HyPEC), a user-friendly, online life cycle assessment (LCA) tool that empowers users to evaluate the carbon emissions intensity of various hydrogen production methods under varying assumptions and inputs. HyPEC provides quick access to credible LCA results by leveraging the GREET model, a widely recognized and established tool developed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory. With this, HyPEC provides insights relative to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), as the GREET model is referenced in the IRA hydrogen production tax credit.

Join us to learn how this publicly available and easy-to-use tool will facilitate productive, pragmatic conversations regarding the role of hydrogen in energy transitions.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26 AT 2:00PM PACIFIC. Join us for a review and discussion of the California Air Resources Board’s 2022 Annual Evaluation of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Deployment and Hydrogen Fuel Station Network Development report. The evaluation offers several findings and data that will be presented and discussed during the briefing.

• California is expected to have more than 176 open-retail hydrogen fueling stations by 2026
• California may meet the Assembly Bill 8 (2013) goal of at least 100 stations by the end of 2023
• Planned network development will achieve the goals of AB 8 and narrow the gap in reaching the 200-station target set by Governor Brown in executive order B-48-18
• Analysis recently published by CARB demonstrates the potential for California’s hydrogen fueling network to achieve financial self-sufficiency by 2030.
