CHS - Hydrogen: The Importance of Collaboration for a Safe and Sustainable Future - October 19, 2022

Thursday, October 27, 2022 - Thursday, October 27, 2022

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27 AT 10:00AM. SoCalGas® and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) invite you to a webinar to learn about an innovative metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell (MS-SOFC) that can be used for clean power generation and electrolytic hydrogen production. Unique features of the MS-SOFC include low materials cost based on stainless steel, ability to start up very quickly from cold to operating temperature, mechanical strength, tolerance to dynamic and aggressive operation, and tolerance to sulfur.

These features enable MS-SOFCs to be used in fast-start and dynamic applications that are too aggressive for conventional SOFCs, including backup power, vehicle range extenders, and chemical conversions using intermittent renewable power. In this seminar we will introduce LBNL’s MS-SOFC technology and use cases for natural gas consumption and hydrogen production. We will also discuss the recent work that LBNL completed with assistance from SoCalGas RD&D, DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technology Office (HFTO), and Advanced Research Project Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) to fabricate and demonstrate MS-SOFCs with catalysts tailored for each of these applications.
