THURSDAY, MARCH 4 AT 1:00AM PT. Prof. Dr. Katsuhiko Hirose will report from the FC Expo Tokyo 2021 in the beginning. He will then move on to the topic "How can we move from current fossil based economy to a sustainable (Hydrogen) society?".

Renewable energy and hydrogen will play an important role but current economy is based on the very simple way to evaluate the sum of monetary benefits based on the thermal vale of energy.
Societal value is differentiated by society and there are no simple formula to evaluate. However we need to build up and develop the proper methodologies.

Prof. Dr. Hirose has been struggling to bring the environmentally friendly technologies into the society such as Hybrid and FCVs for years by trying through the many attempts such as Hydrogen Council's reports.
He will talk about his experiences. He says: "I hope my experiences will help the audience to think deeper and to develop the methodologies to evaluate the societal benefit of hydrogen into their own economy or develop the message to your policy makers to build policies."

Sustainability is not just the sustainability of energy nor environment. Most important aspect of sustainability is life sustainability.
Life is the combination of environment and economy.

During the webinar Prof. Dr. Hirose would like to discuss the development of basic ideas on building the societal value into the real-world economies.

We will discuss the Hydrogen Value as
1. Renewable Energy Reservoir and "Milk-Cheese-Conversion", Thermal Value and Economic value
2. Zero emission power source for the rotational turbine for whole grid systems.
3. Hydrogen can be part of a basic structure of carbon neutral Energy/Social system to support both energy system and economy.
4. Material is necessary.

Thus Hydrogen system can be more basic infrastructure for future human being, material to build carbon neutral future sustainable society than just electricity.

Thursday, March 18, 2021 - Thursday, March 18, 2021

THURSDAY, MARCH 18 AT 9:00AM PT. The California Energy Commission (CEC), will host a remote-access workshop to identify research needs and opportunities for testing and demonstrating hydrogen blending into the existing California natural gas system. The workshop will be held remotely, consistent with Executive Orders N-25-20 and N-29-20 and the recommendations from the California Department of Public Health to encourage physical distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19. The public can participate in the workshop consistent with the direction in these Executive Orders. There will be opportunities for public comment. Instructions for remote participation via Zoom are below.

Agenda

This scoping workshop will introduce the research initiative on hydrogen blending from the 2020-2021 Natural Gas Research and Development (R&D) Program Budget Plan and provide an update on the latest efforts and outlook from stakeholders, including utilities and research institutes. The CEC and stakeholders plan to do the following at the workshop:

  • Present the general purpose and objectives of a future CEC grant funding opportunity (GFO)addressing a natural gas-related initiative titled “Pilot test and Demonstration of Hydrogen Blending into Existing California Natural Gas Pipelines”.
  • Present research roadmaps, plans, and results from California gas utilities and research institutions.
  • Offer stakeholders, experts, and the public the opportunity to provide input about technology barriers, performance metrics, value propositions, and infrastructure planning considerations needed to facilitate successful demonstration projects.
  • Gather in-depth feedback about demonstrations of hydrogen blending to meet the objectives of the solicitation.

A detailed workshop agenda will be posted prior to the workshop. The agenda will include an overview of the Natural Gas R&D Program and the relevant research initiative, planning details for a proposed future GFO, presentations from gas utilities and research institutions, and a discussion session to gather comments from stakeholders, experts, and the general public.

SunLine Transit Agency Fuel Cell Electric Bus Progress Report: Jan. 2020 through Jul. 2020

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Monday, March 1, 2021 - Wednesday, March 3, 2021

MONDAY, MARCH 1 - MARCH 3. Join Executive Director Bill Elrick on Wednesday, March 3 from 11:30am - 12:00pm during the, "FCEV vs BEV: Which will win the race?" panel session.

The prospects of hydrogen fuel cell applications in the light-duty automotive sector remain uncertain. Fuel cell costs are falling and performance increasing, yet not as rapidly as battery technology. Are these electric vehicle types mutually exclusive and in competition, or is there a path of co-existence? Is there a natural domain for each application, centered on vehicle segments and/or geography? How influential is the regulatory framework on each solution? Are policy makers technology neutral, or do they favor one type of EV over another? How could the advent of lifecycle/well-to-wheel–based CO2 regulation influence the trajectory of each technology option?

Monday, March 1, 2021 - Monday, March 1, 2021

MONDAY, MARCH 1, 2021While electricity will assume a dominant role in conveyance of clean energy to end users, sectors such as heavy-duty trucking and transport, marine, aviation, and heavy industry are more difficult to decarbonize, and will benefit from the higher energy density and storage afforded by hydrogen as a vector. Hydrogen can also be used to synthesize other molecular energy carriers and chemicals for recycle of carbon to achieve circularity.  This seminar will examine the challenges and multiple synergistic opportunities for hydrogen in future energy and chemical systems. Is now the time for a hydrogen economy?
