THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2 AT 10:00AM PACIFIC. The curtailment of renewable generation has increased significantly over the last few years in California, and is starting to affect the deployment of new renewable generation. Hydrogen can provide a lot of value, as an energy storage medium, transportation fuel, and to firm up the grid and increase resiliency, especially when produced from low-cost electricity.

This briefing will discuss the opportunity and existing challenges for hydrogen to play a stronger role in the expansion of renewables deployment.

  • 10:00 am - Welcome and Introduction: Sara Fitzsimon Nelson, Policy Director, CHBC

Tuesday, December 7, 2021 - Wednesday, December 8, 2021

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7 - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2021An online technical conference focusing on the development, deployment and industrial integration of next generation electrolysers. The deployment of large-scale electrolysers is the key technological element for the decarbonisation of central industrial and transport sectors. The existing electrolyser technology is now ready for a massive scale-up: In July 2020, the EU Commission has announced an ambitious plan to reach 2 x 40 GW of electrolysers by 2030, targeting 1 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen and 6 GW of electrolyser capacity until 2024. To achieve this ambitious objectives, challenges have to be overcome by industrial users of electrolysers, system manufacturers and other stakeholders within the hydrogen economy. This online conference brings together electrolyser specialists, engineering experts, scientific researchers and other stakeholders to discuss the development, deployment and integration of the next generation of industrial electrolysers.

Speakers

  • Robert Zalosh - Dr. Robert Zalosh is currently a consultant on industrial fire and explosion protection and also a Professor Emeritus of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts. His research activities at FMRC and WPI involved explosion and special fire hazards, of flammable gases and liquids and combustible powders. Currently, he advises clients on hazards and appropriate protection for flammable gases and combustible dusts. He also does fire and explosion incident investigations and serves as an expert witness in ensuing litigation.
  • Will Lowry - Will Lowry works in the BakerRisk San Antonio office in the Blast Effects Section. His work is focused on analytical explosion analyses using approaches ranging from simplified (e.g., blast curve methods, NFPA 68, etc.) to detailed (i.e., Computational Fluid Dynamics). In addition, his work over the last 11 years has included over 40 accident investigations, high-pressure hazards testing, and experimental combustion research involving a wide range of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and fuel-air-inert systems.
  • Dr. J. Kelly Thomas Dr. Kelly Thomas is a Vice President at BakerRisk and leads the Blast Effects Section. His work at BakerRisk over the last 22 years deals with the characterization and modelling of flammability & explosion related phenomena with a focus on the prediction and testing of blast loads from accidental explosions. Dr. Thomas has also participated in the investigation of numerous accidental industrial explosions while at BakerRisk. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16 AT 3:00PM EASTERN. Join CaFCP's Executive Director; Bill Elrick during The Energy Security and Climate Change Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) who is pleased to gather a panel of leading private sector voices to highlight efforts to realize a hydrogen economy.

An emerging solution to the global climate crisis, hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier that can be used in various sectors, including passenger vehicles and electricity generation. Meanwhile, a hydrogen economy requires coordination among many actors to set up the process for producing the hydrogen, transporting it, and having the equipment to use it. This event will illuminate efforts and experiences in advancing hydrogen use in the transportation, power generation, and industrial sectors. This is the first of two events that aim to appreciate various business models as building blocks for a hydrogen economy.

This event is made possible with the support of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles.
